Under the tutelage of Soren Ericson at Viking Sales, Dale Waters and Waters Consulting are involved in research concerning the use of raw natural linseed oil to incapsulate lead paint during the removal process to prevent fraying.
This means that lead based paints can be removed using heat lamps instead of harmful, destructive paint strippers.
This process can make restoration and preservation projects much less costly and help preserve the substrate, where chemical strippers raise the grain and allow the surface of the wood to be scared and scrapped away along with the paint.
In addition, this process allows the linseed oil to be absorbed and helps to plasticize and preserve the wood.
Finally, this eliminates the need to neutralize the chemical stripper, the residue of which can cause a failure of the new paint coating.
We have had great results on historic restoration projects where this process is being used and are excited with the results.
